Can filamentary keratitis lead to blindness?
Disease description:
Red eyes, sometimes accompanied by photophobia and increased discharge, led to a diagnosis of filamentary keratitis. Can filamentary keratitis cause blindness?
Filamentary keratitis does not cause blindness. It occurs due to damage to the corneal epithelium, resulting in filaments on the corneal surface. After removal of these filaments, the corneal epithelium may fail to regenerate properly. Filamentary keratitis is primarily associated with prolonged use of antibiotic eye drops. Patients are advised not to use eye medications indiscriminately, but to follow medical guidance to avoid worsening the condition. Maintaining good eye hygiene is essential.
