Is hyperthyroidism a lifelong condition, and can it be cured?
Disease description:
I've been treating hyperthyroidism for over a year, taking medication continuously. Now I really don't want to take medicine anymore. Is hyperthyroidism a lifelong condition? Can it be cured?
Hyperthyroidism can generally be cured. It is primarily caused by overactive thyroid function, and patients often require long-term treatment with antithyroid medications such as methimazole or propylthiouracil. After a period of medication, the condition can usually be resolved, although the treatment course is relatively long—typically one and a half to two years. Patients should not discontinue or reduce medication arbitrarily, as this may easily lead to recurrence of hyperthyroidism.
