Can you drink water when experiencing a hypertensive episode?
Disease description:
Today my dad said he was feeling really unwell, possibly due to high blood pressure. I want him to drink some water, but I'm not sure if that's okay. Can a person drink water during a high blood pressure episode?
In general, it is acceptable to drink water during a hypertensive episode. When managing high blood pressure, oral medications are typically required, and these are usually taken with lukewarm water. Therefore, drinking water during a hypertensive attack is permissible, but only in moderation. Excessive water intake should be avoided, as it may lead to sodium and water retention, potentially triggering reflexive increases in blood pressure, which could be harmful to the patient's health.
