What causes nosebleeds during altitude sickness?
Disease description:
A few days ago, I traveled to Tibet and suspect I experienced altitude sickness, which was followed by some nosebleeds. I would like to know what causes nosebleeds in relation to altitude sickness.
The main causes of nosebleeds associated with altitude sickness are typically the cold climate, thin air, and dryness. Such environmental conditions can lead to extreme dryness of the nasal mucosa and increased fragility of the capillaries in the nasal cavity. If patients fail to replenish fluids promptly or alleviate the dryness of the nasal mucosa, the capillaries in the nose may rupture and cause bleeding. Additionally, when patients first arrive at high altitudes, the significant change in atmospheric pressure may cause a sudden rise in blood pressure and an increased heart rate.
