Cervical osteophyte formation may be caused by trauma to the neck. Previous cervical injuries, such as cervical fractures, dislocations, or soft tissue contusions, can lead to local bone damage in the cervical spine, thereby causing osteophyte formation. Secondly, exposure to cold may also contribute, as it could result in localized aseptic inflammation in the neck, which in turn may trigger osteophyte development.
