Otitis media is an acute suppurative inflammation caused by infection of the mucosal bone in the mastoid cells. Commonly referred to as mastoiditis, it typically indicates a more severe osteoinflammatory infection of the mastoid bone and primarily refers to this type of inflammation. Clinically, symptoms such as redness, pain, and pus discharge from the ear should raise suspicion of otitis media. In severe cases, destruction of the mastoid bone may lead to the formation of an abscess behind the ear.
