Disease description:

Recently, I've had severe itching in the vulva, and the skin color has become increasingly white. After a medical examination, the doctor diagnosed it as lichen sclerosus of the vulva. I would like to know what causes this condition?

The causes of vulvar leukoplakia are relatively complex, and the main factors may include endocrine disorders, abnormal immune responses, and genetic factors. When endocrine imbalance occurs—such as a decline in estrogen levels—it may lead to inadequate nutritional supply to the skin of the vulva, resulting in pigment loss and white lesions. Abnormal immune system responses can also trigger vulvar leukoplakia; when the immune system mistakenly attacks the skin cells of the vulva, it causes loss of skin pigmentation and pathological changes. Additionally, genetic factors play a certain role in the development of vulvar leukoplakia, as specific gene mutations may increase an individual's risk of developing the condition. In diagnosing vulvar leukoplakia, physicians need to comprehensively evaluate multiple aspects, including the patient’s endocrine status, immune function, and genetic factors.
