The differences among various types of vaginitis lie in their distinct causes and symptoms. Bacterial vaginosis is primarily caused by an overgrowth of Gardnerella and anaerobic bacteria, and is mainly characterized by increased vaginal discharge that worsens after sexual intercourse. Trichomonas vaginitis results from parasitic infection by Trichomonas vaginalis, leading to thin, purulent, yellow-green, frothy discharge with a foul odor. Senile vaginitis (atrophic vaginitis) occurs after menopause due to ovarian function decline, which weakens the vagina's defense barrier and leads to aerobic bacterial infections. It typically causes increased, watery vaginal discharge and is often accompanied by dyspareunia (pain during intercourse).
