Can emphysema cause cyanosis of the lips?
Disease description:
When I went to the hospital for a medical checkup, the doctor told me I have emphysema. Recently, I've developed cyanosis (bluish discoloration) of the lips. Can emphysema cause cyanosis of the lips?
Emphysema may lead to cyanosis of the lips. In severe cases of emphysema, impaired pulmonary ventilation or gas exchange function can result in hypoxemia and even respiratory failure; severely affected patients may develop cyanosis of the lips due to oxygen deficiency. Additionally, when emphysema is complicated by severe pulmonary hypertension, it can also cause hypoxia, leading to this phenomenon.
