Bacteremia should be evaluated at all sites of infection. This evaluation should include infected body cavities and joint spaces, as well as soft tissues and compromised skin. Pus or body fluids should be obtained from these sites for Gram staining and culture. In addition, blood cultures should be performed using both aerobic and anaerobic media. It is recommended to obtain two sets of blood cultures one hour apart, each drawn from different venous sites. Cultures of sputum, catheter insertion sites, and wound specimens are also recommended.
