What is bacteremia?
Disease description:
During a previous medical checkup, the doctor mentioned I had bacteremia. I'd like to know what bacteremia is.
Bacteremia refers to the presence and multiplication of bacteria in the bloodstream. To determine whether bacteria are present in the blood, a sample of peripheral venous blood (10–15 mL) is typically collected from the patient and used for both aerobic and anaerobic bacterial cultures. If bacterial growth is detected in either the aerobic or anaerobic culture bottles, it is termed bacteremia, indicating bacterial proliferation in the bloodstream. Bacteremia often occurs when the oral mucosal barrier is compromised or when the patient's immune system is severely weakened, allowing bacteria to multiply in the blood. It is recommended to maintain good oral hygiene and brush teeth regularly.
