Why does cirrhosis cause pain in the right upper back?
Disease description:
Last week I was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis, but recently I've been experiencing pain in my right upper back. Could you please explain why liver cirrhosis causes pain in the right upper back?
Possible causes of right upper back pain due to liver cirrhosis may include increased capsular tension from hepatomegaly, leading to pain in the liver area that radiates to the right upper back; complications arising from toxin accumulation due to liver failure—such as hepatic encephalopathy and hepatorenal syndrome—may indirectly contribute to right upper back pain; intrahepatic vascular dilation and rupture caused by portal hypertension, along with possible intrahepatic hematoma and ascites, can also result in right upper back pain. Additionally, other conditions associated with cirrhosis—such as cholecystitis, periarthritis of the shoulder, or herpes zoster—may themselves cause right upper back pain. Therefore, patients experiencing right upper back pain should seek timely medical evaluation to determine the exact cause and receive appropriate treatment.
