What should I do if the common peroneal nerve is damaged?
Disease description:
My toes no longer respond to my control and have reached the point where I can't lift them up. The doctor said it's due to common peroneal nerve damage. What should I do for common peroneal nerve injury?
Injury to the common peroneal nerve requires surgical treatment. The common peroneal nerve is particularly vulnerable to damage around the popliteal fossa and the head of the fibula near the knee joint, which can lead to foot drop deformity and functional impairment. Because the nerve in this region lies superficially and is easily accessible, prompt surgical exploration is recommended. Once the injury is confirmed, nerve coaptation surgery should be performed. If full recovery cannot be achieved after surgery, tendon transfer or ankle arthrodesis may be considered to correct the foot drop.
