Will a woman still have her period after getting an IUD?
Disease description:
I gave birth to my second child this year, and I'm considering whether to get an IUD. Will having an IUD affect my menstrual cycle? Do women still have periods after getting an IUD?
Inserting an IUD does not affect the menstrual cycle. The IUD is a safe and reliable method of contraception. Since the device is placed inside the uterus, it may affect menstruation—this is a common side effect. As the IUD is a foreign body within the uterus, the endometrium requires an adjustment period to adapt to its presence. After insertion, women may experience increased menstrual flow and prolonged periods, as well as light spotting before and after menstruation. These symptoms are most noticeable within the first six months after insertion but usually subside as the body gradually adapts to the IUD.
