What causes very light menstrual flow after getting an IUD?
Disease description:
Different people have varying menstrual flow during their periods. However, if the menstrual flow significantly decreases or the cycle lasts fewer than two days, some married women may choose to use an intrauterine device (IUD) for contraception. Since an IUD can affect menstrual flow, why does menstruation become particularly light after inserting an IUD?
After inserting an IUD, menstrual flow may become particularly light due to foreign body reaction, uterine contractions, and reduced menstruation. If menstrual flow is especially scanty, it is generally considered that certain medications may be involved. For example, there is a type of IUD that releases a small amount of progesterone, called Mirena, which is commonly used to treat patients with endometrial polyps, endometrial hyperplasia, uterine fibroids, adenomyosis, or endometriosis. This device has a five-year cycle and slowly releases progesterone within the body.
