Disease description:

Once inflammation of the fallopian tubes is detected, it can have a significant impact on female patients, as the most concerning outcome of this condition is infertility. Many female patients lack proper understanding of salpingitis; so what are the reasons that salpingitis leads to infertility?

The cause of infertility due to salpingitis lies in the fact that during childbirth, miscarriage, or menstruation, pathogens may enter the internal reproductive organs and easily trigger salpingitis. Infections may also be associated with non-strictly sterile procedures, such as intrauterine device placement, curettage, tubal fluid infusion, and oil-based iodinated contrast hysterosalpingography. Because the fallopian tube lumen is relatively narrow—its narrowest portion having a diameter of only 1–2 mm—when inflammation occurs, the narrowest segment and the fimbriated end of the tube are prone to adhesions, leading to luminal narrowing or complete occlusion. As a result, sperm and egg cannot meet within the tube, resulting in tubal infertility.
