I am a 27-year-old female. Recently, I've noticed that my vaginal discharge often becomes abnormal before my menstrual period. I'm worried this might be caused by some gynecological condition. What could cause abnormal vaginal discharge before menstruation?

The increased vaginal discharge before menstruation is caused by rising levels of estrogen and progesterone in the body, which stimulate the cervical glands and increase vaginal secretions. Additionally, pelvic congestion before menstruum, along with gradual cervical dilation, also contributes to increased vaginal discharge. This is a normal physiological phenomenon. Women may notice milky white discharge before their period, without odor or itching symptoms. It is recommended to wash daily with warm water and change underwear frequently. However, if there is excessive discharge before menstruation accompanied by odor or itching discomfort, this indicates an abnormal condition related to inflammation or infection. A routine gynecological vaginal discharge examination and pelvic color Doppler ultrasound should be performed to determine whether conditions such as vaginitis, cervicitis, or pelvic inflammatory disease are present, and appropriate treatment should be provided based on the underlying cause.
