Is IgA nephropathy an autoimmune disease?
Disease description:
My mom said one of her good friends has IgA nephropathy. I've heard this disease is an autoimmune disorder, but I'd like to know—does IgA nephropathy belong to autoimmune diseases?
IgA nephropathy is generally considered an autoimmune disease. It is the most common type of primary glomerular disease and falls under the category of immune-mediated kidney disorders. The condition is typically diagnosed through a kidney biopsy, which reveals deposits of immunoglobulin A (IgA) — either predominantly or exclusively — within the glomeruli, the filtering structures of the kidney. These IgA deposits lead to clinical manifestations such as hematuria and proteinuria in affected patients.
