What should I do if I have a long wisdom tooth?
The term "growing long wisdom teeth" generally refers to the eruption of third molars. If the wisdom teeth grow in a normal position and cause no pain or discomfort, special treatment is usually unnecessary; maintaining good oral hygiene through regular practices such as rinsing after meals and brushing teeth morning and night is sufficient. However, if the erupting wisdom tooth irritates the surrounding periodontal tissues, inflammation may develop, known as pericoronitis. In such cases, it is important to follow medical advice promptly by taking oral anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving medications to alleviate symptoms. If the wisdom tooth is malpositioned—for example, due to insufficient space for eruption or improper alignment relative to the opposing third molar—to prevent recurrent pericoronitis, early extraction of the wisdom tooth is recommended.
