During a physical examination, the doctor told me that my bilirubin level was slightly elevated. I'm curious—what are the causes and potential risks of high bilirubin?

Dr. Liu Feng

Elevated bilirubin is a common clinical finding involving various factors, both physiological and pathological. Below are some causes of elevated bilirubin levels:

1. Intense exercise: High-intensity physical activity in a short period may impair liver function, leading to a temporary increase in blood bilirubin levels. This usually resolves after rest.

2. High-fat diet: Consuming large amounts of fatty and cholesterol-rich foods may affect the liver cells' ability to metabolize bilirubin, resulting in elevated bilirubin levels.

3. Liver diseases: Conditions such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver cancer can impair the liver's ability to metabolize and excrete bilirubin, causing its accumulation in the bloodstream.

4. Biliary tract diseases: Obstruction of the bile ducts can block the normal excretion of bile, preventing bilirubin from entering the intestines properly and leading to increased bilirubin levels.

Elevated bilirubin levels can also pose certain health risks:

1. Jaundice: When bilirubin levels rise, the skin, mucous membranes, and whites of the eyes may develop jaundice, appearing yellow. This is the most common sign of elevated bilirubin.

2. Liver damage: Prolonged high bilirubin levels may harm the liver. In particular, when elevated bilirubin is caused by underlying liver disease, liver function may progressively worsen.

3. Neurological problems: High bilirubin levels may adversely affect the central nervous system. For example, kernicterus in newborns can lead to movement disorders and delayed intellectual development.

4. Kidney problems: Elevated bilirubin may negatively impact kidney function and, in severe cases, potentially lead to renal failure.

If elevated bilirubin is detected, prompt medical evaluation is recommended.
