What should not be consumed with Portulaca oleracea?
A relative from my side of the family brought us some purslane, a vegetable I've never eaten before. I'm concerned about potential contraindications and would like to know what foods should generally not be consumed with purslane.
1. Purslane is inherently a cold-natured food and should not be consumed together with other cold-natured foods such as white radish, cucumber, bitter gourd, and watermelon, as this may exacerbate internal dampness and coldness, leading to spleen and stomach deficiency-cold, which could trigger discomforts such as abdominal pain and diarrhea.
2. Purslane should not be consumed together with spicy and stimulating foods such as chili peppers, garlic, and ginger, as these can increase the burden on the gastrointestinal tract and cause indigestion.
3. Purslane is rich in oxalic acid and tannins; therefore, it should not be eaten together with high-calcium foods such as soy products, dairy products, sea fish, and shrimp, to avoid the formation of insoluble precipitates when calcium binds with oxalic acid. This reduces the nutritional value of the food and may cause gastrointestinal discomfort.
4. Caution should also be exercised when consuming purslane together with seafood such as crab and snails, as seafood is prone to triggering allergic reactions.
