Disease description:

Recently, my eyes have been uncomfortable. Every time I go outside and encounter wind, my eyes start tearing up continuously. However, under normal circumstances, there are no other discomforts. I would like to know what exactly causes the eyes to tear up when exposed to wind?

It is possible for the eyes to tear up when exposed to wind as a normal physiological response. When the eyes are stimulated by cold wind, they may reflexively produce more tears to protect the eyeball. However, it could also indicate an underlying eye condition, such as blocked tear ducts, inward-growing eyelashes (trichiasis), or conjunctivitis. These conditions can interfere with the normal drainage of tears, making the eyes more prone to tearing when exposed to wind. Patients are advised to first observe their symptoms. If excessive tearing occurs frequently and is accompanied by eye discomfort such as redness, swelling, or pain, medical attention should be sought promptly. A doctor will make a diagnosis based on the specific condition and recommend appropriate treatments, which may include medication or surgery. In addition, patients should take care to protect their eyes by avoiding prolonged eye strain and minimizing exposure to external irritants such as wind and dust.
