How is tubal irrigation performed?

Tubal insufflation (saline infusion) is a procedure in which a specific fluid, such as normal saline or an antibiotic solution, is injected through the cervical opening into the uterine cavity to assess the patency of the fallopian tubes. Patients should empty their bladder prior to the procedure and assume the lithotomy position. The external genitalia and vagina are disinfected, and the physician uses a probe to determine the depth and orientation of the uterus before inserting the infusion catheter into the uterine cavity and slowly injecting the fluid. Patients are advised to undergo thorough preoperative evaluations to ensure they are medically fit for the procedure. After the procedure, patients should monitor for abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding, maintain cleanliness of the external genitalia, abstain from sexual intercourse to prevent infection, and follow a balanced diet to promote recovery.
