Can a cervical examination cause bleeding?
Disease description:
I've had heavier menstrual flow over the past two to three months, and my doctor recommended a cervical examination. Will a cervical exam cause bleeding?
Whether cervical examination causes bleeding depends on multiple factors. If there is no cervical lesion and the doctor performs the procedure gently, bleeding usually does not occur. However, bleeding may happen under the following circumstances:
1. Presence of cervical lesions, such as cervicitis or cervical polyps, which may bleed when irritated during the examination;
2. Minor trauma to the cervical mucosa during collection of cervical cells, which may lead to slight bleeding, though typically minimal;
3. Increased risk of bleeding in cases of severe cervicitis or high-grade cervical intraepithelial lesions.
Whether bleeding occurs during a cervical exam should be assessed based on individual circumstances. If bleeding does occur, prompt medical evaluation is recommended to determine the underlying cause.
