What is polycystic ovary?
Disease description:
My period has been irregular for the past few months, mainly coming at unpredictable times and with heavier than normal flow. I went to get checked and was told I have polycystic ovaries. I don't really understand what that means, so I'd like to ask: What is polycystic ovary syndrome?
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), also known as polycystic ovarian syndrome, is a common endocrine disorder, particularly prevalent among women of reproductive age. Its main features include the presence of multiple immature follicles in the ovaries (typically more than 12 follicles per ovary), along with possible clinical or biochemical signs of elevated androgen levels, chronic anovulation, and polycystic ovarian morphology. These changes can lead to a range of symptoms such as hirsutism, acne, menstrual irregularities, infertility, and obesity. The exact cause of PCOS is not yet fully understood, but it may be related to genetic factors, hormonal imbalances, insulin resistance, and other factors. Treatment approaches for PCOS are varied and aim to regulate menstrual cycles, induce ovulation, and manage symptoms, including pharmacological therapy, dietary modifications, and lifestyle changes.
