How long after giving birth does menstruation return?
The time when menstruation returns after childbirth is not fixed and mainly depends on individual physical condition and whether breastfeeding is being practiced.
1. Non-breastfeeding: If a woman is not breastfeeding and her body recovers well, menstruation may resume around 1 to 3 months after delivery. However, if the body is weak, the return of menstruation may be delayed.
2. Breastfeeding: For women who breastfeed, menstruation typically returns later. Elevated levels of prolactin can suppress the secretion of follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone, thereby delaying the return of menstruation. In most cases, menstruation resumes between six months to one year postpartum, and some women may not regain their menstrual cycle until after weaning.
Even in the absence of menstruation, the ovaries may still ovulate normally; therefore, contraceptive measures should be taken if sexual activity is resumed.
