How is adenomyosis treated?

The treatment of adenomyosis mainly consists of two categories: medication and surgical interventions.

In terms of drug therapy, hormone replacement therapy can be used, such as oral or injectable estrogen and progestin medications—including estradiol valerate tablets and medroxyprogesterone acetate tablets—to simulate the natural menstrual cycle and alleviate symptoms. Additionally, progestin therapy is another option, using medications such as levonorgestrel tablets or dydrogesterone tablets to help establish endometrial shedding mechanisms, thereby reducing symptoms such as irregular menstruation and pain caused by adenomyosis.

Surgical treatments include lesion resection, endometrial ablation, hysterectomy, and uterine artery embolization. Patients with mild conditions and smaller uterine volume may opt for lesion resection. Endometrial ablation involves removing endometrial tissue to achieve therapeutic goals. Hysterectomy and uterine artery embolization are more suitable for patients with severe conditions or those who do not wish to preserve fertility.
