Since becoming pregnant, I have frequently experienced constipation, going three days without a bowel movement and having great difficulty when defecating. What are the treatment options for constipation in pregnant women?
Treatment for constipation during pregnancy:
1. Dietary adjustment: Increase intake of dietary fiber by consuming more legumes, vegetables, nuts, and especially water-rich and high-fiber foods such as Chinese cabbage. Include two servings of fruit daily, such as bananas and apples, and eat more vegetables like spinach and loofah. Maintain a varied diet with diverse food choices, including moderate amounts of whole grains.
2. Proper hydration: Drink water at regular times each day, aiming for a total intake of 1,500–2,000 mL. Drinking a glass of warm water or honey water upon waking can help stimulate intestinal motility.
3. Bowel habits: Establish a routine for bowel movements, ideally around 7 a.m. Avoid reading or using mobile phones during defecation to prevent distraction.
4. Medication support: When necessary, oral probiotics or lactulose may be used, but the safety and suitability of any medication must be carefully considered.
5. Appropriate physical activity: During the second trimester and beyond, pregnant women can engage in mild exercises such as walking, swimming, or prenatal yoga to promote intestinal motility. Patients with concerns should seek medical advice promptly.
