Do you need to hold urine after extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy for ureteral stones? Why?

After extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy for ureteral stones, it is generally not necessary to hold urine. Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy uses externally generated shock waves to fragment stones inside the body so they can be passed out with urine. Holding urine may increase urinary tract pressure and hinder stone expulsion. Therefore, after lithotripsy, patients should drink plenty of water to facilitate stone passage. Additionally, symptoms such as hematuria and pain may occur after the procedure. Patients should follow medical advice for anti-inflammatory treatment, hemostasis, adequate rest, and dietary adjustments, avoiding strenuous exercise and spicy or irritating foods to promote recovery. If symptoms persist or worsen, prompt medical attention is required.
