What is suppurative parotitis and what are its symptoms?
Disease description:
I have a fever, and the examination showed I have suppurative parotitis. Could you please explain what suppurative parotitis is and what symptoms it causes?
Pyogenic parotitis is an inflammation of the parotid gland caused by bacterial infection, typically classified into acute and chronic forms. The infection often occurs due to poor oral hygiene, stasis or retention of saliva, allowing bacteria to travel retrograde through the parotid duct into the gland. The primary causative organism is Staphylococcus aureus. Clinical manifestations include:
1. Parotid swelling and pain: Patients exhibit noticeable redness, swelling, and pain in the parotid region, which may worsen during chewing or eating irritating foods.
2. Fever and systemic discomfort: Most patients develop high fever, chills, and general malaise; some may also show elevated white blood cell counts.
3. Purulent discharge: The opening of the affected parotid duct may appear red and swollen, with purulent discharge.
When these symptoms occur, prompt medical evaluation and appropriate treatment are necessary.
