Dr. Guo Huijie
The symptoms of suppurative parotitis mainly include local and systemic manifestations. In terms of local symptoms, patients typically present with redness, swelling, and pain in the parotid region, often accompanied by induration or abscess formation; these abscesses may rupture and discharge pus. When pressure is applied to the parotid duct opening, purulent secretions may be expressed. Additionally, if inflammation involves the masseter muscle area, it may lead to trismus (difficulty in opening the mouth). Systemic symptoms may include fever or high fever, chills, malaise, loss of appetite, and fatigue. Blood tests may reveal an elevated total white blood cell count with a marked increase in neutrophils. Together, these signs and symptoms constitute the typical clinical presentation of suppurative parotitis. If such symptoms occur, prompt medical attention and professional treatment are recommended.
