Can a protruded intervertebral disc return to its original position?
Disease description:
I have a lumbar disc herniation. It has been treated and I am no longer in pain. May I ask if the herniated disc can return to its normal position?

Whether a herniated disc can retract mainly depends on the severity of the condition and the treatment method.
1. Mild cases or first episodes: For patients with mild symptoms or first-time episodes, especially younger individuals, the ligaments around the intervertebral discs and the nucleus pulposus tissue still maintain good elasticity. With appropriate treatment (such as traction and reduction), there is a possibility of disc retraction.
2. Middle-aged and elderly patients: Middle-aged and elderly patients often have issues such as bone spurs, ligament degeneration, and calcification, resulting in loss of elasticity. Thus, spontaneous retraction is less likely. These patients usually require surgical treatment to relieve symptoms.
For patients with intervertebral disc herniation, timely medical consultation and selecting appropriate treatment methods according to a physician's recommendations are very important.
