There are some notable differences between mosquito bites and wasp stings in terms of symptoms. Mosquito bites are typically caused by small flying insects such as mosquitoes that have piercing-sucking mouthparts. These insects pierce the skin with their mouthparts to suck blood for nourishment, causing minor trauma and possibly triggering inflammatory reactions such as redness, swelling, and itching of the skin. In contrast, wasp stings are more severe. Wasp stingers contain toxins, which are released into the skin upon stinging, leading to pain, localized redness and swelling, itching, rashes, and even allergic reactions such as fever. Compared to mosquito bites, wasp stings may result in larger wound areas and symptoms that are more intense and prolonged. By observing the size of the wound and associated symptoms, it is possible to preliminarily differentiate between mosquito bites and wasp stings.
