I was recently diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver. I'm wondering whether sexual activity can transmit the condition. Is cirrhosis contagious through sexual contact?

Cirrhosis itself is not contagious; therefore, simple cirrhosis cannot be transmitted through sexual activity. However, cirrhosis is often caused by various underlying conditions, among which infection with hepatitis B, C, or D viruses is one of the main causes. These hepatitis viruses are contagious and can be transmitted through sexual contact. In addition, hepatitis viruses can also spread via blood, mother-to-child transmission, and the digestive tract. Therefore, if a patient with cirrhosis is also carrying hepatitis virus, there is a risk of transmission during sexual activity. It is recommended that appropriate protective measures, such as using condoms, be taken during sexual contact with individuals who have cirrhosis to reduce the risk of transmission. At the same time, patients with cirrhosis should actively treat the underlying disease and control disease progression to improve quality of life and prolong survival.
