Dr. Shen Yonghua
The presence of palmar erythema does not necessarily indicate cirrhosis, although cirrhosis is one of the common causes. Palmar erythema is an external manifestation of liver disease and is particularly common in patients with chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis. While cirrhosis may lead to the development of palmar erythema, other factors such as viral hepatitis, alcoholic fatty liver disease, drug-induced hepatotoxicity, and unhealthy lifestyle habits can also cause it. Palmar erythema mainly presents as pink or red patches on both sides of the thenar and hypothenar eminences of the palms, as well as on the inner surfaces of the fingers, resembling cinnabar in color. When palmar erythema is accompanied by other symptoms such as nasal or gum bleeding, or skin and mucosal petechiae and ecchymoses, prompt medical attention should be sought to determine the underlying cause.
