Why does cirrhosis cause somnolence?
Disease description:
My family member has cirrhosis and often says they feel weak and sleepy. May I ask why cirrhosis causes excessive sleepiness?
The occurrence of drowsiness in patients with cirrhosis may be caused by multiple factors, mainly including:
1. Malnutrition: Cirrhosis can reduce digestive function; excessive intake of indigestible food can increase the burden on the liver, causing fatigue and drowsiness.
2. Electrolyte imbalance: Cirrhosis may lead to portal hypertension, affecting normal absorption and excretion of nutrients, resulting in fluid and electrolyte disturbances, and causing fatigue and drowsiness. Drowsiness may be particularly severe when potassium levels are low.
3. Hypoproteinemia and anemia: Cirrhosis causes reduced synthesis of albumin, leading to hypoproteinemia, and may also be accompanied by anemia, both of which can contribute to poor mental status and drowsiness.
