Disease description:

Two years ago, I was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia. Currently, I undergo daily treatment with medication, and my family members take meticulous care of me every day. I am very afraid that this disease might be contagious, so I ask them to have less contact with me, but they refuse to listen or believe me. Is chronic myeloid leukemia contagious?

Dr. Liu Feng
Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), also known as chronic granulocytic leukemia, is a malignant clonal disease originating from hematopoietic stem cells, and it is not contagious. 1. From the nature of the disease, CML is a disorder within the blood system. Its occurrence and progression are mainly influenced by genetic factors, gene mutations, and environmental factors, rather than being triggered by infectious microorganisms. 2. Regarding modes of transmission, CML cannot be transmitted through contact, droplets, blood, or other body fluids. Everyday contact between patients and between patients and healthy individuals, such as handshaking, hugging, or sharing meals, does not lead to the transmission of CML. Therefore, CML does not pose a risk of infection to others, and patients need not feel worried or panicked about it.
