Is it normal to have diarrhea after taking Orlistat capsules?
Disease description:
I have recently been taking weight loss medication, and as a result, I've had diarrhea consisting entirely of water, and my legs have become so weak that I can barely stand. Is it normal to experience diarrhea while taking Orlistat capsules?
It is usually normal to experience diarrhea after taking Orlistat capsules, which may be related to the drug's mechanism of action. Orlistat capsules are reversible gastrointestinal lipase inhibitors that prevent the absorption of some dietary fats in the stomach and intestines, potentially causing gastrointestinal discomfort symptoms such as diarrhea. Common adverse reactions include oily spotting, increased flatulence, urgency of defecation, oily stools, fatty stools, and increased frequency of bowel movements. These symptoms tend to worsen with increased dietary fat intake. If diarrhea symptoms are mild, generally no special treatment is required, and symptoms may improve after discontinuation of the medication or by adjusting the diet (reducing intake of high-fat foods). However, if diarrhea is severe, persistent, or worsening, it is recommended to stop the medication promptly and consult a doctor to rule out other potential causes and determine whether a medication change is necessary.
