Disease description:

My baby was recently diagnosed with favism (G6PD deficiency), and I'm worried about the recurrence of symptoms. I have been paying special attention to his/her diet; could you please tell me what the dietary restrictions and禁忌 (prohibited items) are for favism?

Dr. Liu Feng
The contraindications for favism mainly include: 1. Dietary restrictions: Avoid eating fava beans and their products, such as fava bean powder and fava bean paste. Avoid spicy and irritating foods, such as chili peppers, Sichuan peppercorns, and garlic. Use caution with fruits high in vitamin C, such as lemons, kiwifruits, and oranges, as large amounts of vitamin C may trigger hemolysis. Avoid eating bitter melon, peanuts, and certain other legumes, as these also may cause hemolysis. 2. Household product restrictions: Avoid using household products containing naphthalene, camphor balls (paradichlorobenzene), wintergreen oil, dyes, and similar ingredients. Mint-flavored toothpastes, body washes, and similar products should also be avoided. 3. Medication restrictions: Avoid using medications such as acetanilide, methylene blue, sulfonamides, nitrofurans, and similar drugs, as these medications may worsen hemolysis. Use streptomycin, chloramphenicol, aspirin, and similar medications cautiously, and only under a doctor's guidance. 4. Other precautions: Avoid visiting fava bean fields during the flowering, fruiting, or harvesting seasons of the plant to prevent hemolysis caused by pollen. Patients with favism should focus on a high-protein, high-nutrition diet and engage in moderate exercise to enhance physical health.
