Is it serious when liver palms appear in liver cirrhosis?
Disease description:
I am a patient with cirrhosis. During a medical examination, the doctor discovered liver palms. So, how serious is the presence of liver palms in cirrhosis?
The severity of palmar erythema in liver cirrhosis should be assessed according to the specific circumstances:
1. Simple palmar erythema: If the patient only presents with red spots or patches on the skin of the thenar and hypothenar eminences of the hand, which blanch under pressure and there are no other significant symptoms, the condition is generally not serious. It may be caused by estrogen accumulation due to impaired liver function, and regular follow-up examinations are sufficient.
2. Accompanied by other symptoms: If palmar erythema is accompanied by spider angiomas, fatigue, weight loss, jaundice, and other symptoms, it may indicate a more severe condition, possibly related to hepatitis, liver cancer, or other diseases. Prompt medical evaluation and further examinations are required for a definitive diagnosis and treatment according to medical advice.
3. Disease progression: Palmar erythema caused by liver cirrhosis may indicate further deterioration of liver function. Without timely intervention, it can lead to severe complications such as portal hypertension and rupture bleeding of esophageal-gastric varices, which can endanger life safety.
