Is itching a sign of late-stage cirrhosis?
Disease description:
I have cirrhosis of the liver, and recently I have been experiencing severe body itching. I have tried some topical medications for skin itching, but the effects have not been very good. Is body itching in cirrhosis a sign of advanced disease?
Itching in patients with cirrhosis cannot be directly interpreted as a sign of advanced-stage disease. Skin itching is relatively common among patients with cirrhosis and is primarily caused by impaired liver function and elevated bilirubin levels. Although itching may occur in patients with advanced cirrhosis, itching alone cannot serve as the sole basis for determining the stage of cirrhosis. Late-stage cirrhosis typically presents with severely compromised liver function, accompanied by various complex symptoms such as ascites, hepatosplenomegaly, and a tendency to bleed. Therefore, for cirrhosis patients experiencing itching, the assessment should take into account other clinical manifestations and diagnostic test results to accurately determine the stage of the disease.
