Dr. Shen Yonghua
Patients with cirrhosis can consume garlic in moderation, but should pay attention to the following points: 1. Nutritional value: Garlic contains rare elements such as selenium and germanium. Selenium participates in aerobic metabolism of blood, helps eliminate toxins, reduces the burden on the liver, and thus has a protective effect on the liver. Meanwhile, sulfur-containing compounds in garlic have strong antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. 2. Methods of consumption: Garlic can be eaten raw or pickled, or processed into various foods such as garlic bread and garlic cake. However, excessive consumption of raw garlic should be avoided because the volatile spicy compounds it contains may cause gastrointestinal discomfort. 3. Precautions: Patients with cirrhosis should avoid eating spicy and irritating foods; therefore, garlic should be consumed in moderation to avoid increasing the burden on or causing discomfort to the gastrointestinal tract. Additionally, patients with decompensated cirrhosis and ascites should thoroughly chew garlic to prevent swallowing whole cloves that might lacerate blood vessels and lead to gastrointestinal bleeding.
