Dr. Huang Shichang
Neurosis is not a psychosis, but falls within the category of mental disorders. Neurosis is a general term for a group of mental disorders, including neurasthenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety disorder, phobia, somatic symptom disorder, and others. Its onset is usually associated with adverse psychosocial factors. The main symptoms include anxiety, persistent tension, fear, persistent distress, and obsessive thoughts. Patients often experience various subjective physical discomforts, but clinical examinations fail to detect organic lesions. Unlike psychosis, patients with neurosis are usually conscious and oriented, and are able to actively seek medical help and cooperate with treatment. Therefore, neurosis and psychosis differ significantly in clinical presentation, treatment approaches, and prognosis.
