Disease description:

The child suddenly ran over just now saying that his body itched badly. I lifted his clothes and saw many small red spots. I think it might be hives (urticaria). Is this condition contagious?

Allergic urticaria is not contagious. It is a skin disease caused by an allergic reaction. Its pathogenesis involves the body producing specific IgE antibodies against a certain substance. Upon subsequent exposure to that substance, it binds with the IgE antibodies, triggering a series of inflammatory reactions that lead to symptoms such as skin erythema and wheals. Since this reaction is an overreaction of the body to specific substances, rather than being caused by pathogenic infection, it is not contagious. Neither direct contact with the patient's skin nor transmission through air, water, or food can spread allergic urticaria to others. Therefore, the public need not worry about contracting this disease through contact with individuals who have allergic urticaria.
