This range is determined through ultrasound examination, where the area around the pregnant woman's umbilicus is divided into four quadrants: upper, lower, left, and right. The amniotic fluid depth in each quadrant is measured and then summed to calculate the amniotic fluid index. The AFI is an important indicator for assessing fetal development within the uterus. If the AFI is less than 8 cm, it indicates oligohydramnios (low amniotic fluid), while an AFI exceeding 25 cm indicates polyhydramnios (excessive amniotic fluid).
