Gum bleeding may be caused by gingivitis or periodontal disease, common conditions resulting from plaque buildup. Plaque is a mass of bacteria in the mouth that, if not regularly removed, can cause redness, swelling, tenderness of the gums, and easy bleeding, especially during tooth brushing or eating hard foods.

In its early stages, gingivitis can be reversed through improved oral hygiene practices, such as brushing teeth correctly twice daily, using dental floss to remove food debris between teeth, and scheduling regular cleanings at a dental clinic. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to more severe periodontal disease, leading to loss of supporting tissues around the teeth and potentially resulting in loose teeth or even tooth loss.

Besides poor oral hygiene, certain systemic conditions such as blood disorders, including leukemia, or taking certain medications may also cause gum bleeding. Pregnant women may also experience gingivitis due to hormonal changes, known as pregnancy gingivitis.

If gum bleeding occurs frequently or does not subside, prompt dental consultation is advised. Patients should also maintain a balanced diet and consume more foods rich in vitamins C and K, which are beneficial for maintaining gum health.
