Causes of Elevated Bilirubin Levels
Disease description:
A few days ago, I had a physical examination, and now the test results are out. I found that my bilirubin level is elevated. May I ask, what are the possible causes of elevated bilirubin levels?

The causes of elevated bilirubin levels are diverse and mainly fall into two categories: physiological and pathological. Physiological factors, such as intense physical activity, excessive alcohol consumption, neonatal physiological jaundice, and normal food intake, may temporarily elevate bilirubin levels. These situations generally do not require specific treatment and can resolve spontaneously. Pathological causes are more complex and may involve hepatobiliary diseases such as viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, fatty liver disease, and gallstones. These conditions can interfere with bilirubin metabolism and excretion, leading to abnormally high bilirubin levels. Additionally, biliary obstruction, hemolytic disorders, and drug-induced jaundice can also cause elevated bilirubin levels. When high bilirubin levels are detected, timely medical consultation is recommended to identify the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment as directed by a physician.
