Applying toothpaste to a baby's mosquito bite is not a recommended practice. Although certain ingredients in toothpaste may provide a temporary cooling sensation that can slightly relieve itching or discomfort, toothpaste is not specifically formulated for post-insect-bite skin care and may contain irritating substances that could unnecessarily irritate or cause allergic reactions on a baby's delicate skin. Particularly toothpastes containing ingredients like mint or fluoride should be used with caution. The appropriate approach is to first gently wash the bite area with mild soap and water to remove any saliva left by the insect, thereby reducing the chance of an allergic reaction. Afterwards, you may carefully apply a small amount of an insect bite relief cream or calamine lotion specifically designed for infants and toddlers. These products effectively alleviate redness, swelling, and itching, and are considered safe for young skin. If the baby has a severe reaction—for example, extensive swelling, fever, pain, or persistent crying—seek medical attention promptly.
