Causes of Frequent Urination, Urgency, and Painful Urination

Frequent urination, urgency, and painful urination are medically referred to as "bladder irritative symptoms" or "urinary tract irritative signs." These may be typical manifestations of a urinary tract infection (UTI), especially cystitis. Urinary tract infections are caused by bacterial invasion of the urethra, bladder, and even the kidneys. Other possible causes include: 1. **Urinary system stones**: Stones can irritate the urethral wall, causing pain and discomfort during urination. 2. **Prostatitis**: In males, inflammation of the prostate can cause urinary tract symptoms. 3. **Overactive bladder**: Involuntary contractions of the bladder muscles lead to frequent urination and urgency, but usually without pain. 4. **Urethral stricture**: Narrowing of the urethral passage due to any cause may cause difficulty and pain during urination. 5. **Sexually transmitted diseases**: Such conditions as gonorrhea and non-gonococcal urethritis may also cause these symptoms. 6. **Diabetes mellitus**: High blood sugar levels may lead to increased urine output (polyuria) and an increased risk of infection.
