Can macular degeneration of the fundus be cured?

Macular degeneration is a significant eye disease that affects vision and is primarily categorized into two types: dry and wet. Dry macular degeneration usually progresses slowly, and currently, there are no specific medications available for its treatment. However, nutritional supplements containing antioxidants, vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, and lutein may help slow the progression of the disease. Regular monitoring and lifestyle modifications, such as quitting smoking and controlling blood pressure and blood sugar levels, can also help delay disease progression. Wet macular degeneration is more severe and may lead to rapid vision loss. Currently, treatment options include injections of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) drugs, which can inhibit the growth of abnormal blood vessels. These treatments may sometimes be combined with photodynamic therapy or laser treatment. Although these therapies cannot completely cure macular degeneration, they can significantly improve vision in some patients and prevent further deterioration.
